GIMP help please

I've been spending lots (too much!) time trying to figure out how to use GIMP. is there a tutorial anywhere, something where I can read up on what everything means, what it does, etc.
sorry, I'm not phrasing this well, I don't think. haven't been getting much sleep lately.
