I am an amateur photographer. Photography is a hobby that I would like to get into more and learn more about. I've been looking at 2 DSLR's that I am interested in but do not know which one to buy.

Could you give opinions on both please.

    Sony Alpha 230
    Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS)

    Go by feel then.

Just curious if there's a reason Nikon was washed off the list.

There's a new D3000 and also the D5000 body out now that might interest you. D5000 has excellent high ISO ability as well as video, D3000 is the new replacement for the D40/D60 bodies.

Just wanted to throw it out there, not trying to add to the confusion - OK maybe a little

The Canon XSi (or 450D, depending on what its called there) would be a much better choice over the XS. I don't know much about Nikons, but the Canon XSi would make an excellent choice for someone wanting an entry level DSLR. The XS is really limited and scaled back by comparisson.
