18th Bday pre invite shoot

Just had a shoot for an 18th bday. She had wanted a spotlight looking pic cos her theme was moulin rouge. Hope you all enjoy.

I think they look good considering the theme, and what she wanted. They're very moody, which is nice. What kind of light set up did you use? I'm getting more into studio lighting and like to know what people use.

Thanks. Light set up was a 430 EXII (wireless remote), light stand, reflector umbrella. But with the umbrella i closed it up abit so i will only get a little bit of the place lit up so its easier to PS the black on..

She is a beautiful model.

I feel that there is too much dark shadow underneath the chin. A white reflector would've been a benefit IMO to reduce the harsh shadow line. I also think the main is too concentrated on her chest / torso than her face in most. This is where feathering the light comes into play.

Additionally, another reflector (or light) would've helped to separate her from the background. As is, she really melts into darkness, leaving no distinguishable features for her head/hair.

Hmm im still getting used to strobing..Can you fill me in on feathering the light?Yeah really needed a reflector but was such a late notice shoot and sad thing was i got another flash 2 weeks after

looks good. i am sure she isnt too worried about the shadow under her chin but yea, if this were a model, ya may wanna get rid of that shadow. Good job though.

#2, 3, 4. Here face and neck area have different color than her arms. Almost look like they have different kind of lights.

A hair light would have been nice because her hair blends into the background

Hmm not sure why the arms and face have different colour, i used an external flash and had a shoot through umbrella attatched..Maybe from make up?

Since im only starting up, how would u add a hair light onto this? more light and another strobe?

A hair light is an additional light soruce. Generally speaking, it is set opposite the main light, high above the subject and angled down. It is also to be considered a 'kiss of light', so it is not intended to be overpowering, only to highlight the crown and separate the subject from the background. Particularly with models having dark hair against a dark background.
