I think 500px blew through its novelty phase a while ago, and it's seemed like they've been struggling to figure out what they're going to be when they grow up, so to speak, but I didn't know there was an organizational power struggle going on the whole time.

sooner or later a startup has to be profitable, and to do that they need a cohesive strategy. Sounds like the cohesive strategy wasn't there. now that they apparently have one, they have to implement it to be profitable. Only time will tell.

Their new discussions section is such a joke. It actually had discussions for like 2 days and now its just people posting their photos hoping to make it to the front page.

1. UWA nature shots with the saturation turned up to 11.
or
2. Naked women

Both will get you to the front page in no time.

500pix basically became popular because a handful of good photographers got on there and promoted it as a place for "Good" photography. So it grew as people got bored of seeing shots on flickr - but in the end with no actual gate-keepers on the site 500pix just became another image host.

And honestly when the money rolls in being open to anyone and everyone is more profitable than being closed shop and elitist.

It could be worse. It could be mediocre photographers sanctimoniously advising newbies about how much their photos suck *cough*Flickr*cough*. Or just people posting those cliche "surreal" photos *cough*Flickr*cough*
