A Call to Arms: STOP THE OVERMODERATION OF OUR THREADS!

As long as it doesn't turn into personal attacks why let us not rip into some mom with a camera who thinks she can shoot wedding or start her own business?

As long as it doesn't turn into personal attacks we don't close those threads anyway.

We do, however, expect users to provide critique and feedback in a respectful tone to each other and that is often where problems happen since the mindset is more to "RIP into the person" than advise them.

Close more threads! When the threads get unruly, close every tenth thread and the rest will fall in line pretty fast.

It worked for Rome, it can work for you.

You closed 3-4 of mine that had no personal attacks in them. I think there is a witch hunt on against me and my threads.

Face it runnah. You're a Gaul in Rome.

RUN LITTLE DUDE, RUN

AND if the mods want to stop thread that are repetitive, why don't they intercept the threads when they start?
How many - WHAT KIND OF LENS DO I NEED or I WANT TO DO A WEDDING threads do we need?

Why not send a message to every new registrant or poster when they say hello and give some expectations.
You want a better site, then so something proactively.

Er I'm not quite sure what you mean? You're saying that a better forum is one that activly drives away and removes recruitment of new members and that the best thing a forum made to teach and help educate new photographers is to - remove all their most likely early threads?

It sounds more like you want us to make TPF a place for experienced members only - and honestly we are not going down that pathway. If you want that from a web community then you'll have to either found your own or find another. TPF will remain open to users of all talent levels.

No, a better forum is one where the new members get some advice on how best to get answers.
Right now, new members get no orientation at all because they don't know where it is or they don't read it.

Send them an email when they register with some links and expect them to read it.
Some unknown mod says hello to everyone, why doesn't that same mod post a message on how to search, where to post, what to read, how to get critique.
Right now new people just wander in and wander around.

There is no way you can "Rip into" some of the idiots on here (or elsewhere)... without it turning into a personal attack (perception is everything after all!). That is why I often get hollered at for some of my comments about and to some of the people that post here! It has gotten to where even honest and fair critique is taken as a personal attack by some!

And since we have a higher percentage of "PRO's" than we do people who want to learn photography (even if the most of the PRO's NEED to learn photography (you know, the "I don't charge much" types))... why bother?

Personally I think the forum has really gone downhill... but I keep sticking around, hoping it will improve!

Craig is right. There are some thin skinned members (old and new) that see any criticism or even disagree with them to be a personal attack.

Cry wolf much or is the sky falling?

It's not too hard to search for. Let's see, since October 16, 2012, you have started 132 threads. Out of those 132, two, yes TWO have been closed.

...... back to the drama.

That is higher than the national average. I am being profiled.

I think the more startling statistic is that I average a 45% "like" to post ratio.

I would like to note that we do not always take the "newbies" side and there are times where we do feel that the person being critiqued is reacting badly. However often as not once they react badly things quickly turn into a fight - once a fight starts mods have to remain impartial (since by that point both sides are fighting).

However this matter can also be one of the style and manner in how people express themselves (as you yourself admit). I wonder if we could not do some kind of semi-structured way of exchanging methods in communication/lessons in how to express ones self. Something that allows us to improve how we - as a forum - communicate and give critique. At least on that score we can then help significantly reduce the amount of perceived attacks and also help solidify a good, clear way to reply to these people that can be backed up by mods and other members without a gang-up attack mode style.

Runnah,

Just because you are paranoid, does not mean that someone is not out to get you! ;)

You get all those likes because (take your pick):

A: some people feel sorry for you!
B: Some people are mildly frightened by you!
C: None of the above!

Runnah,

I have drawn my own conclusions:

1. Overread hates American/Freedom. (not serious)
2. The moderating team has seen my nude body shots are all are feeling inadaquate so they take it out on me.
3. No one on the team has a sense of humour.
4. All of the Above.

I guess we are due for one of these threads...been a month or two. lol.

Pretty sure number 3 wins.

no one ever wins in trying to please the public as a whole. ever. accept it and move on.

OP, if you don't like it you got to open your own forum. Got to remember....NONE (And I've been on nearly 15 of them) of the online photo forums is run for luv of photography...they are run for luv of $. As such, whatever hurts ads hurts $.

That is why I seldom post pix here. Who wants to be bothered thinking how can I censor / butcher this or that pix to make it pass or ooops this one is not allowed...I forgot! Serious artists don't like to be stifled, they thrive on freedom. (I'm more photog than artist, but same thing.)

That is why I use Tumblr. But Tumblr has poor feedback. It is just like talking to yourself.

In any case, we got to be thankful for what we do have. They do a nice job here for what is offered. And if you want something more, you got to do it yourself.

Forums don't pay their mods, all they have to do is announce an opening and 50 people will jump at the opportunity to do it for free. As for the site, The Photo Forum is hosted on a dedicated server which isn't cheap and that is without the software updates. I have owned/ran my fair share of forums and I suspect TPF makes just enough to pay the bills.

As for the OP, you should contact the Super-mod or Admin if you got an issue with an individual mod.

I find comment #1 disturbing! While I do not always agree with Overread, I think he does try to be fair (more so than some at least) and I doubt that he "hates" "American" or "Freedom". Naming names makes that almost a "Personal" attack... which is a big POO POO deal!

I am sure your nude body shots would induce something... but inadequacy is not one of the things that come to mind! More like terror, or nausea! ;)

I disagree that they (the mod team) lack a sense of humor also... (one of them maybe), but in general... the mod team does have a sense of humor! Even Terry (I know she has a sense of humor for a fact!) ;)

Did you ever volunteer for research with Timothy Leary, by any chance? just curious!
