thanks. I stood them in shade, but I still had my orange gel on my flash, and so it cast an odd color on them. I want to go back in and rework it a touch, I rushed the editing on these. I agree it does look a bit under when looking again just now.

Thanks, I liked it to. I actually had a chance to position/pose them and put a little thought into it. I need to edit the blue car out in the background and clean up the dad's shirt.


Question/thoughts:

That last shot was taken indoors, with bounced flash, at 4000 ISO and 1/60 in order to even expose properly. I shot it at f/5 to make sure everyone was in focus, and I thought that was still a bit borderline.

It was a small dimly lit room and I tried a few shots without flash at f/2.8 and then with my 85mm at f/1.8 and there was no way that was going to work. and even if it did, I wouldn't have any DOF, and still required a very slow shutter and without flash it would be plagued with blur.

I guess I still don't get why people will always say the default: if you're shooting in low-light you need fast glass. I think if you're shooting in low-light, you need big pixels.

In this first image, do you have anything less cropped? The cropping of her dress bothers me just a little bit... For the first two, was your flash on-camera? Something about the lighting seems off to me.. like the subjects are a little too dark, and the catchlight is kinda unappealing to me in the dead center of their eyes. I like the baby image, but think it would be better without the water droplets or whatever on its face (maybe clone them out). I just can't come up with any reason they would be there. The group picture is better than anything I could have done in this setting. I can't believe that you shot at f/5 INDOORS! It looks good, and at least on my tablet, very sharp without much noise. Some of the background elements distract me, but that was quite a feat you accomplished there.

Forgive me if you weren't looking for C&C - you didn't mention it, but you seemed receptive to others' comments! If not, feel free to ignore mine, just one man's opinions!

Nope, very welcomed.

First few were all family snapshots, but I used on camera fill flash I placed them in shade and used the flash for fill at -2.0EV using matrix metering.

The first was more successful for sure, I put the sun behind them for rim.

What I forgot to do was adjust my ISO as I was just shooting indoors and they were shot at 800 so the flash is HSS and I think leading to odd fill light.

First was only cropped up top to balance the frame. I have a hard time framing with the D600 cause I dont like to recompose, but the focus area is so damn small I always have people low in the frame with thte far most focus point selected over the faces.

I have a few shoots lined up in the next few weeks where I'll actually bring my modifiers and use flash off camera.


As for shooting indoors, I shot this at f/3.2:

My wife is OOF but her friend is sharp.

I don't see where shooting wide open is beneficial. Even at f/5 there was one or two shots where I'd miss a face because they were just outside the DOF window.

Nice shots! IMO I think #1 would benefit on a crop more above the knees or less crop below the knees.Otherwise nice shots,good color and skin tones.# 2 love the composition and crop and my favorite pick.

Well, can't speak for anyone else but I really, really like #2.

You made rational decisions on these shots. Indoors, I like the way the lights are rendered on the seven sisters and the lights.

#2. that lighted-up branch is distracting, but these are casual family snaps. Not bad. I've often seen worse. I dunno...these are what a decent modern d-slr can do when the operator makes sound or even sound-ish decisions.
