Advice/Recommendations for a new camera please

I cant imagine anyone starting out in the dslr world, who did a course and had a sony p+s camera broken, being disappointed with a nikon d3300 twin lens kit

I'm looking in the $500-$800 range and would like to get a quality camera that has a good zoom lens.

I have the forerunner version (Nikon D5000) with the same 18-55mm zoom lens. She will love it.

The current versions of the basic Nikon DSLR camera line are the D3300 and D5500. Either one is nice. The D5500 has the flip-out screen.
These cameras are sold with a "Kit" lens, the 18-55mm VR zoom lens.

There are some kits that also include the 55-200mm VR or the 55-300mm VR zoom lenses.
I actually like just the basic kit lens and then add the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX lens. VR is Vibration Reduction.

Also need to add a couple memory cards like the SanDisk Extreme Pro 16gb or 32gb (these have faster write speeds than the cards you might pick up in the discount bin).

Might have your wife pick out the bag for the camera.

I ended up asking her a couple of qualifying questions, and between what she told me, the help on here, and what I've read, I decided to go with the NikonD3300 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm and 55-200mm Lenses Kit.

Thank you all for you help and knowledge. It is much appreciated. I'm not really into taking photographs, but I do enjoy witnessing great photography. Maybe this purchase will influence a new hobby for me as well.

Note there are VR and non-VR versions of both those lenses. The newer versions are VR, but a lot of kits sold on-line have the non-VR versions.
