Ahh, ok. Some of the problems you might be having with the "lack of sharpness," may be as a result of you shooting 'wide-open' at 135mm. You don't need to close the aperture to f11 (although that is probably right around that lenses sweet-spot). F8 should be enough, I would think. The only problem you might run into with that lens is that the focus may be slow, which may also attribute to the softness of the photo's.

It's awesome isn't it? I knew little about photography until I got a 60d last month and now I'm addicted to this site. The wife isn't happy about another expensive hobby though....but I sold her on the idea that we can go out and shoot together.

Depends on whether or not you need it. I don't often find myself in situations where I really NEED it.

I want to see where they're landing. We can't tell the difference between takeoff, landing and midflight without some sort of visual reference like a tower, the ground or the horizon.

Juices post shows how this adds to the photo quite well.
