Airplane Landing Shots

I want to see where they're landing. We can't tell the difference between takeoff, landing and midflight without some sort of visual reference like a tower, the ground or the horizon.

Juices post shows how this adds to the photo quite well.

I'm just looking for an aircraft tightly framed and sharp against a blue sky. You should be able to tell it's landing (atleast for the audience these photos will be used for) from the gear and flaps being down.

Ok, If thats what your going for. If your audience is a bunch of plane enthusiasts. Just letting ya know it wasn't the first thing I noticed.

But still consider. The first 11 pages of google image search. There's maybe 10-15(some duplicate) images of planes and no ground. The are also the least striking.

Juice had a distinct advantage - access.

I doubt poker_jake can get above aircraft that are landing/taking off. Few commerical airports are located near high hills. Commercial pilots hate the ones that are, like San Diego.

Why are your photos PNG files?

The other 2, the dark from underneath shots, don't work very well. A CPL (Circular PoLarizing) filter on your lens will help add color saturation to the sky, but will also cause you to lose up to 2 stops of exposure.

I picked up a CPL the day after these shots were taken. Next time I'm by MSP, I'll try and reshoot them earlier in the day

Here you go for another....Maho Beach on St Maarten, right at the airport...what a Hoot!!! There were amazing opportunites for shots of giant aircraft and I missed them all....Next Time!!!
