Do i have to worry about my memory card being erased when going through security at the airport?

No. If you were shooting film, you might have to worry about the X-Ray, but they have protective bags for that. They don't use anything magnetic, so you won't lose info on the memory cards.

Did a search on google and found various sites discussing this... all seemed to suggest that memory cards are safe to go through airport scanners and x-ray machines with normal travel frequency.

To be on the safe side, you could take your cards in your hand-luggage, or pocket, as the walk-through scanners tend to be weaker than those used for scanning baggage for the hold.

I always carry my cards on me or in my carry on. I've come home with cards that have been through several scanners in airports around the world and have never had a problem.
