The lighting is not "harsh" really...it's warm, late-evening Alaska summer sunlight. You know, from the land of the midnight sun...
There is PLENTY of light in his left eye, with a big, bright catchlight. His shadow-side eyeball has a soft, delicate catchlight in the eye. The lighting is a classic split lighting pattern, right down the center of his face. I love this type of warm, late afternoon/evening "yellow" light. it really conveys a mood. I think the background and those rusted steel bars in that strong horizontal pattern are much more distracting than the lighting.
