I had a blah BG that didn't do an anything to enhance the heron, so I took look at it as a B&W and liked it...

I like it! I like the white sky with the bird contrast

Wow. Really nice.

I like the photo but i don't know if i like the black and white, i love birds and love all the colors they come in and feel i am missing out here, but awesome shot anyway :-)

Some birds such as crows, starlings, blackbirds and many buzzards aren't particularly colorful. Should we only relegate them to B&W and forgo the subtleties of what little colors they offer? I don't think it is necessary to show the color of a bird so widely known as a heron or really, even a peacock. I like challenging the imagination to see the color through a colorless veil. In this case, as Hugh points out, "it is the detail in the feathers, the capture of a full range of tonal values that makes this shot a success - at least for me....and, B&W are colors.

If Avedon had shot birds..

This is a nice take on this subject. Wildlife normally is basically a gear and technique game, where the goal is simply to get the sharpest most representative picture of the hardest possible thing, with very little attention paid to artistry. This is not. Well done!
