Yes, one trick I learned is to use the flash a lot more. In the second shot I used full flash but for the Jay and Downy shots I set the flash at 1 full stop under exposed. Much more natural looking. On the D-70 hold the flash button and use the front (sub command dial) to increase or decrease the flash amount.

I am always in manual mode, so I just open up the menu and set the flash level there, and play with it untill I get it close., then mess with the exposure as it is a RAW file, in PSCS... but, I have never been happy with a outdoor flash shot.. only a few of mine are worth editing.
