It is a Caddisfly larva. Crazy looking thing, isn't it? The first time I saw it, that was my exact question, "What is it?"

Where I grew up in Iowa, they made covers of tiny bits of gravel. Living in springs and other clear, cold water.

There is an executive airport nearby, and they are based there. I need to get over there some day and see if I can find a location where I can get shots of them taking off and landing. There are at least four of them there.

Have you been to the Air museum at Love Field and/or the Confederate Air Force museum nearby? Both are well worth a visit if you like aviation.
