Another lens question

Just picked up a D 5100 and it came with an 18-55 lens, it's my 1st decent camera.
I will be taking a cruise to Alaska in a few months as well as going to Italy and other parts of Europe after I get back

I want to buy another lens but I have heard I need a 55-200 or a 55-300 is that true or is there another lens I should consider?

A little confused with so many options and opinions out there
Any help will be appreciated

Pick up a used 55-200 vr from keh for about 125 best bang for your buck super sharp lens. Perfect compliment to 18-55, if u have more money get a 35 1.8 as well.

Get a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 its about 1400.00 bucks.....if your planning on shooting for years to come and get serious......then spen the $$$ and save alot later.

If its just for now to see if your going to like it, get the Nikon 70-300 F4.5-5.6 its about 600.00 but very nice
