I don't own any AF-S lens so I don't know, but from most of the pictures of AF-S lens I've seen, I've never seen one that changes in physical size when zoomed in or out. Are the elements all moving inside?

I'm wondering because for telephoto lens storage in a back pack, being able to retract is a big plus, at least to me.

Edit: Ok I just found out that the 18-200 does change in length.... what about the 70-200?

The 70-200 does not retract. It does come with a protective soft case.

The variable aperture zooms tend to change size when zooming, the fixed aperture zooms often don't. Has nothing to do with AF-S
