Are there any Photographic magazines out there.

Definitely a newbie question. Years ago when I were doing a lot of film photography it seemed every drug store, food chain and any other shop with a decent magazine collection had several photography magazines.

It is hard to believe that with the explosion of digital camera's they no long exist. I suppose like the Ham radio magazines they have been replaced with the internet.

Since I have no problem jumping between film and photons are there any magazines that covers both? I prefer film and info on "retro" stuff, but it never hurts to a see what new. Likewise, hard copy magazines are my preference but I do have a Kindle.

Loads of them still around, have a look on Archive.org & you should be able to download free copies of several of the popular ones. Most have 'photography', 'photographer', 'photo' or 'camera' in the name (Annoyingly wildcards don't work well in their search engine).

If people would be willing to pay the actual price for news then there would be indeed quality news around. However as long as news hangs on advertisement thats not going to happen. News reporters dependent upon advertisements will always have to please the advertisers.

I got a present of a 1 year subscription for a monthly magazine, it was good and I got a number of insights and when it came time to resubscribe I did but I found that they essential rehashed the previous years topics with some new skirts and blouses.

I don't agree at all. There are many good magazines it's just they rehash subjects far too often.
For someone just starting out the re-hash will be new.

I personally find stuff of interest anyway, I understand the bias towards advertisers, which FWIW is true for websites, etc as well. I've hardly ever brought anything from seeing it mentioned in magazines - but sometimes I'll get a third party equivalent

There's the Photo District News. http://www.pdnonline.com
PDN has part of the magazine online and the entire issue is available by subscription.

There's also LensWork, and Aperture.

I'm not sure about these two, I'd usually pick them up at a bookstore every so often.

The NY Times has a photography section called 'Lens'; I'm not sure when/how often it's in. Lens

The British Journal of Photography publishes some articles online, and there's B+W Photography, but I don't know about subscriptions since they're both in the UK.

There’s a British publisher you can track down through digitalcameraworld.com They publish a number of photo magazines. I get the digital version, but hard copy subscriptions are also available.

IMHO, the internet killed the good ones. Years ago, publishers could afford to keep knowledgeable photographers with good writing skills on staff and subscribers were willing to pay for good content. I use to look forward to articles by my favorites. Magazines use to be about 2/3 content and 1/3 ads, but that changed to 50/50 and at the same time limited page counts to keep printing costs down, then they used cheaper papers so the quality went down. Along the way internet users became very use to information being "free" (BTW, if you are not paying for a product, you are the product). So, you will find some online subscription magazines, but all the ones I know have their content online for free. So, I've given up on subscriptions and just do a search for the info I want.
