Well, yesterday my wife encountered a neighbour with a baby squirrel ... she was trying to get it back to its mother. We took it in for the night and tried to release it the next day ... well that didn't go exactly as planned. We knew there was a nest in a tree close by, so we placed the baby at the base of the tree hoping it would climb up back to the nest ... hmm, it just stayed there.
We put the baby back into our cat carrier and after giving it some fluids we heard a call, similar to the babies call ... I investigated and found the tree that the baby squirrel came from, as the calls were coming from another baby squirrel in the tree.
OK, so we put the first baby on the tree hoping it would climb back up to the nest ... hmmmm, the other TWO babies came down ... now we have three.

We searched around all day trying to figure out if the mother was around, and sadly we did not see any adult squirrels that could have been there mother.
We are just giving them fluids and hopefully they will be OK until tomorrow.

Tomorrow we are going to try to find a wildlife place to take them to (if anyone in the GTA has a suggestion it would be helpful).

I forgot to mention ... the first squirrel was rescued from the grey cat that is roaming around our area ... so possibly mom squirrel may have already been a victim ?

That's Sad about mom but at the same time what an experience likely never to forget.Nice shot of some cuties.Hopefully Someone will chim In with suggestions or maybe you and the wifey have new friends for life.

Sad but beautiful. Nature has a way of rearing this. Great job!

We dropped them off at a Wildlife Refuge centre in Pefferlaw ... no one closer could/will take them.

Note: Apples are Ok to give to squirrels.

Now the mother is having a seizure trying to find the kids again... :(

We searched of the mom since Friday ... no sign ... if must have been longer if the kids seeked out humans instead of waiting for mom.
The mom can survive without the kids ... the kids cannot survive without a mom.

Nature is tough.

They can survive once weaned and these look like they are weaned, plus the fact that they eat solid foods.
I understand that you did what you thought was right, but I like to allow nature to prevail.
Once the babies are that size, the mother is out on full time gathering duty and may not be seen at all during any visits to the tree, but she will provide enough for them to eat.

Nah, these ones were not weaned yet ... they definitely did not have any knowledge of figuring out solid food. The apple was a stop gap to give them some nutrition and water.
The image makes them look bigger than what they are, as the tree is quiet slim.
Yes, I too would opt for nature to take its course ... but this case was different.
