...can someone tell me what the benefit of having a hood on your lens is? *scratches head*
My 70-300 fell out of my unzipped bag about 3 feet onto concrete.
I screamed like a little girl. Then checked. My lens hood was on backwards for storage, it took the brunt of the fall, cracked but protected the lens.
Learn from my fail.

LMFAO!...two fails make a pass!
...so the hood is mainly for reduction in flare...not so much to benefit the photo or point more focus on a subject etc?
Just make sure you don't have it on backward.........

Yeah because it takes up so much less room when it's off the lens.
I keep mine on backwards when it's in the bag and will usually leave it on if I'm not going to be shooting much before I put it back in the bag. I like to have my hoods with me, but if I cup them together inside each other they still take up more room than if I leave them attached to the lenses backwards.
Do you really think it's a coincidence that Canon (and Nikon, I'm guessing) made them so they'd go on either way?![]()

I just put it on because it makes my lens look bigger and badder![]()
