The soft focus and tight crop kills it for me. I like the concept. Colors are a little striking... Try it in b&w and bring up the shadows a tad.

IMO:
There is no artistic reason to have the top of his head and the shadow so close to the margins.
The colors are over-saturated.

You might get better help if you allow editing.
It is much easier to show suggested changes with a picture than to describe them, in a visual medium.

and I don't understand the title -'Boy by Deon Hamilton'; does that have a cultural significance that I'm missing, and is that really a trademark?

crop ratio is wonky, why? Too tight top and bottom, as already mentioned. subject is under-exposed in your attempt to expose background properly. Cute concept but not executed well, sorry, try again!
