C&C on maternity shots please :)

I did my first maternity shoot this past November and am not getting as much feedback on them as I would like. Feedback helps keep me motivated to practice more so I am posting here for some C&C to find out what I may be doing wrong. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated.

Yep, she insisted on the cliche ones. I tried to be more creative...I am working on that.

She wanted her belly to peek out...a lot of maternity shots are like that and she liked it. Are maternity shots not very popular here or something?

I think it would help if you posted what you shot with, and the settings? The main thing I see is that they look very much like snapshots. There is no real plan. Cute pictures, for the baby book, but other then that. HIS choice of pants? just kidding (kind of)

The angles are VERY unflattering, many shots are straight up her nose....

They could have benefited from less DOF and that leads me to believe you shot these with the lens that came with the camera? Not a bad start but really look at the images, most of them her face is twisted and it gives her a triple chin.

It would help if you numbered them and only posted no more then 5 images per thread.

The belly pokes out when the shirt is pulled up slightly, not just the pants unzipped. I have seen really cute photos of maternity pants unbottoned as well, but I can not say why this is not working with your shot.

If i was to shoot maternity they would have to be comfortable with their body because i would only shoot tasteful nudes, because all the shots i see on forums of couples in the park are very boring

Thanks for the tips! I am working on angles..and lighting. I am using a Nikon D3100 and yes with the lens that came with it...18-55 I believe. I noticed the triple chin which bugs the crap outta me...and actually one of those is one of her faves :meh:

His pants!? He would have been better wearing a dress or something lol I hated them..and tried to crop out as much as possible in most shots.

it helps if you number your photos. my critique is on posing and what I would think if they were my pics; not commenting on technical stuff since I am very new myself. I do think you posted way to many pics....best to keep it under 5.

1) I don't care for, you can't really tell she is preg
2) cute but maybe place her hands so the accentuate the bump
3) why are they staring at hands...focus should be on belly

5) I like but maybe have her looking down at belly

8) I don't care for...weird that a belly is behind a tree. although some women probably like these poses...
9) decent...maybe have hands/arms around belly though....

11) I do not like, she looks disproportioned and it is not a flattering pose

15) & 16) I know its popular but I think the whole block thing is cheesy.


overall advice from a woman with two babies:
focus on belly. no frontal shots, profile shots are best.

I just noticed the unbuttoned pants....really tacky (sorry)

She was very adamant about wanting the "nature" setting with a fall-ish theme (even though the fall colors were not happening yet here is SC). She was very shy about even pulling her shirt up over the belly. Maybe b/c she has a big birthmark? IDK...but I didn't push her.
