I recently bought a Nikon D3000 and am wondering if I can use a lens I inherited from my deceased father in-law.

Since I'm a newb, I'll just read you what it says:

Tokina SD 70-210mm 1:4-5.6

on the side it says HOYA 52mm

It looks really nice. Must some really sweet glass.

I'm kinda thinking it probably isn't safe to use with the D3000 but wanted to check.

Sorry... I know little about Nikon....

But are you "THE" guitar guy... Jeff Dunham & Akmed's "guitar guy"? Cause that would just be cool.

Hoya 52mm is a filter, nothing to do with the lens.

And I do not know much about Tokina, but they do make lenses for Nikon, have you compared the mounts? What camera did your dad have?

He had a Nikon FG. It's manual focus, so not sure if it's compatible with the D3000. I haven't tried to put it on, don't want to damage the camera.

Post some photos of the lens here. Be sure include photos of the lens mount.

If he used the lens on his FG it will fit your 3000. They're both F mounts. It will not meter on your camera so you'll have to shoot totally manual and set both the aperture and shutter speed. Take a guess, take a picture and review it in the LCD, adjust and repeat.

I've used my F3 lenses on my D90 on occasion.
