canon 500d lenses

Hi there, i am thinking about buying the canon 500d but i have heard some stories about the lenses that comes with the camera, iv heard that its not any good and doesn't offer much manual control such as aperture adjustment when in video mode. what lens would be recommended so that i could get full manual control while in video mode.

can you use old canon lenses the would over ride any automatic adjustment.
