Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Lens

Anyone has this particular lens? My friend want to get for Marcro and wild life photography. As of right now, he have the Canon 17-85 and the Canon 70-300mm. I suggest to him that he should get the 70-200 F4 L IS instead but the reason he want to get this particular lens is so he does not have to carry around two lenses (and an extra body) when he go on long hike. I'm wondering how does this lens perform considering it zoom range. At $2500, it's quite an expensive lens. He also planning on going uupgrading to Canon 5d Mk II so the 18-200mm EF-S lens is not an option.
