Carrying camera gear on a bicycle?

I am starting to get the feeling that the bag I want doesn't exist, yes... I may have to go the DIY route. Riding in bad weather isn't really a choice most of the time, and neither are crashes, so I wanted something solid. Seems like some sort of modified pelican situation will be the way to go.

thanks all for the suggestions

I've considered having the camera on my person, but I was hoping for a way to carry it on the bike itself. I'd like to be able to go some distance with my gear, and I don't fancy riding for 3-4 hours with a pack on... I've also heard some scary stories about spinal injuries from landing on a backpack in a crash, especially one strong enough to protect a camera.

Thanks for the responses though! good info so far

I think it would depend on many things. First what type of a bike are you planning to put this on?
I have 4 bikes (road, all mountain, cross country and dh) and personally I've never thought of putting the gear directly on the bike. I like the idea of having it on me as I can always jump off the bike and let the bike go. Now if you had your gear attached directly on the bike, it would not be protected against rolling bikes and im fairly certain there is no way to have a shock absorbing bag... so your best bet is carrying it on your back in a nice comfortable backpack.

Next question... how many times have you had any crashes which would injure your spine? If you take huge air which would have a direct concern in regards to really bad crashes, I would not suggest carrying anything on you or on the bike for that matter.

Still not really sure what kind of bike you have, but if you are going to do a DIY then do it right. Start with a Pelican Case that you can attach and detach anytime like that soft case I posted. If you get the Pelican that has the custom foam insert you will be golden! Water proof and shock proof!

They are a bit pricey, but you end up with the best!

I'll be carrying everything on a Jamis Aurora Elite, it's like halfway between a touring bike and a commuter... but it's got a rear rack, so I was envisioning my solution to attach there. I just stumbled across this: Pelican Case Mod | Bike Commuters which seems to be not too much work to put together. Even though it's a diy, all his mounting hardware comes from an actual bike bag manufacturer, which seems a little more credible/reliable than some other mods I've seen.

With regard to backpacks... I commuted to work by bike with a backpack for a while, and while it worked, I feel like it really restricts your movement on the bike. Totally a personal preference thing I suppose.

I'm pretty sure at this point that I'll be trying to mount a pelican or two, I'll definitely post some pics when I've got it working!

Yeah but a lowepro200 backpack will haul more than two of those pelican cases

I have a lowepro 300 backpack in fact, which I love for hiking and travelling and such. It's like 25lbs with a nice complement of gear though, and I'm a little dude :lmao:

Might want to check this out. Porta Brace

It's like a pelican with backpack straps. (Not the best looking thing in my book, but might suit your needs.)

There's also this company. Boblbee They make a variety. Came across them when i was looking for something for on my motorcycle, but they only had one model or so back then and they didn't look like they would suit my needs.
