WOW! I missed alot. Woa....major conclusions being drawn here. 1. I actually posted the pics because I thought they were GREAT and I compared myself to my friend because I looked up to her. When everyone started saying that they were majorly flawed, I began to see (now knowing all that I have learned on here and past few months) the errors in her photos. She, herself......wanted me to post the pics! SHE ASKED ME TO! She can't do it herself right now because she has no access to a computer regularly. She wanted honest CC. I told her that I would post her pics (the ones that she chose for me to....the ones of MY daughter) I gave her my cc...WHICH WAS EXACTLY what I replied on here; that after learning alot...I see some of the error but that doesn't make me any better. She is okay with it because we are learning together. We are very honest with eachother and have no problem giving one another CC and being honest. Our friendship has never been effected because we know we are both in progress. I nver said she was pro'...just someone I looked up to. In fact, the whole "metering" convo was exactly how I posted it. I even said to her, as did I via this site, wow, I'm surprised I know what metering is because I usually come to you about this.

When I said "In all honesty, this actually makes me feel better. I kind of felt the same way but thought that I was by far, worse than her because I hadn't been doing it for long. Her dad is a pro and she aspires to have a career. She is not doing anything now but having fun. Since I joined this site and basically cramming over the past 3 months, I have come to realize that I "know" more. This doesn't mean I take a better pic. There are , by far, pther people I know who are pro' who I really look up to. This was just someone who did it as a hobby and some people have commented positively on her work. "

.....what made me feel better was not her being critiqued but just that perhaps I was starting to be able to see things as a photographer. To clarify, I did not mean I felt better because everyone was ragging on her work. I felt better in regards to my photography knowledge because I was beginning to be able to pin point actual structural pros or cons of certain photos. She is starting to as well.

Just so everyone knows, we are actually sitting here together, about to take some Halloween photos. =) She appreciates the CC as well. We look foward to learning and laughing about our mistakes together.

I had told her about this site and she wanted to join but can't because she doesn't have a computer right now. I said I would post her pics for her and she knows what I said. She has just read everything and is actually laughing because everyone was so offended for her and she didn't care at all. She wanted the CC and knows that I think her work is abstract looking but that this is not necessarily a bad thing. She knows I have always looked up to her photography and together, we are now learning even more together.

However, it is refreshing to know that there are so many concerned people. Reading back on the original post now, I can see how everyting could have been taken wrong.

You keep using the word "abstract" to describe the pictures you shared.... But can you explain what that means to you?

I disappeared for like 10 hours and look at all the trouble I caused. lol. so wait, bitterjewler actually offended someone other an me on this site and scared them off? My friend and I (still right here) are of the mentality that we are both a work in progress. She knows that we both have our strengths and weaknesses.

BTW: everything on this site is judged and picked at. I would never have posted someone's pics unless they asked me to. She didn't just allow me to, SHE ASKED ME TO and has read the CC. Before anyone goes knocking my morale...(THANKS MISHELE =) for defending me) just be sure to have your facts straight. It is just as morally wrong to ASSUME.

She is actually afraid to join the site now. lol. =)

Happy Halloween everyone! Get some good pics!!!!!

lol! NO IT IS NOT! Things spin out of control really fast on here. REALLY FAST!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having friends and family as a status quo and feed each other challenges for improvement. I do it all the time. With my circle of surfing buddies, we talk smack, tease wach other, push each other and I think it does help on improvement with our sport. We all look at surfing as freedom outlet with no rules, no boundaries, no constraits - total self expression.
We're totally happy where we're at.

It's good to see that your applying that in your photography! =).

Don't take offense to the advice given to you, the members here were just pushing you to the next level and increase your photography capacity beyond friends or immediate circles. But if that works for you hey good luck with it =).

A friend of mine has been photographing for a long time. I actually know more about photog. than her but am not necessarily better. She told me that she pretty much always keeps her settings the same and just pp everything in elements. To me, this seemed off but this is what she does. I had asked her what type of metering she was using in a given situation and she didn't even know what that was. For so long, although she is not a pro, I have compared my photos to hers. Here are three. What do you think of this style? She has allowed me to upload these photos. To me, I think they are a little too saturated and unrealistic looking although I can see she is looking to be abstract.

Maybe I'm taking this in the wrong context but this is why I thought it sounded like you were bashing her.

Wait,wait,wait--your friend has, "no access to a computer regularly"? And yet, she's shooting with a digital camera?

And processing in Elements...Quite a remarkable achievement, actually.

Consider how leading those statements are and how they are reflected in the answers you got. To speak plainly you are beating around saying you know it's not right, but can't be the one to tell her... AND you and I and your friend all know that portraits like that aren't abstract. They are straight up out of focus. The saturation thing? It's not my taste and it will print poorly, but it is a style that people do like so that is just fine. It's her style, just not mine which is good. We don't want to all be alike.

In all honesty, this actually makes me feel better. I kind of felt the same way but thought that I was by far, worse than her because I hadn't been doing it for long.
Again, consider how this sounds: "I feel better that everyone else has said the images are poor. (glad it wasn't me) "

Of course we can go on because it sounds as if you couldn't tell her that because... "Her father is a pro and I am self taught"

Your "question" and statements are what got you the responses that you got. Yes, this site is harsh. I have said it publicly myself, but you have to really step back and take a look at the answers you got here.
If your friend wanted to post images for help she should have logged in on your computer and said "hey, I am Jane Doe, AMOMENT's friend and I'd like to get some feedback too!" Yes, she will have limited access, but she isn't going to have any more access with you posting her images. It doesn't add up. I am sorry!
This whole post is really wonky and the way it was presented reflects in the answers.

All I gotta say is wow....
