Clouds and the sky and whatnot

I live in a little place called Nowhereville. We have nothing! Well, we have cows. And a walmart. And a homeless guy that walks like bigfoot.

Anyway, I took some pics of clouds last evening. So yeah. What do you think? Your response will tell me whether I should put it on instagram or not.

I really like it. The cloud formations are interesting and the hues in the sky are lovely. The only thing I would have preferred is more foreground elements. Perhaps another telephone/power line on the right side, or shooting from a lower angle/lying down in the dirt. I appreciate the cables are somewhat of a lead into the image but I don't think they are strong enough to draw you through the image. My eye is drawn to the left side of the image more, because of the brightness. A larger silhouetted pole on the right would given the viewer a bit more eye candy.

Very nice, I agree with AKUK that I'd like a little more of the foreground but just a wee sliver on the bottom and I could imagine this shot printed BIG.

For a shot of clouds.. its definitely good. Excellent choice adding some interest by leaving the trees and telephone wires there. Perfect positioning of the sun. A great moment of time as the sun is setting and the colors of the sky are terrific. The clouds look really cool.

But even with all that it's still just clouds. Pictures of clouds, no matter how well composed tend to be fairly boring and that's what this is to me, boring. If there were birds on the telephone wire it would be an interesting shot of birds on a telephone wire even... but there's only clouds.

Maybe its just me, but I tend to look at clouds as an excellent background piece for a shot.. an element to be used to make a picture with a separate subject 10 times better. But clouds used as a subject tend to be uninteresting. I see those every day.

I pretty much agree with you. Clouds are usually boring except these had a different neato shape, so I thought "might as well".

Cool and I have no problem with that. I would do the exact same thing. Just a suggestion for next time: Look for something interesting in the scene that you could include the clouds in or photograph something you've been thinking would be nice to have an image of with the clouds included. That way you are making the best of what the clouds offer visually.

Its also good practice to scope out photogenic objects like buildings and statues and to return later to photograph them when you notice a dynamic or interesting sky like that.

I grew up in a place not to different from what you describe (except I like to call it "The Middle of F---ing Nowhere") one of the things I noticed after having lived in cities and visiting my family there is that there is a lot more to photograph than you would expect. Whenever I've visited my parents I've marveled at all the great photos that could be taken in farmland and nothingness... something I almost never did while I lived there.
