College Basketball

I had my first opportunity to shoot college basketball this past week, and I must say its quite different than anything I've done before. I didn't quite get the shutter speed where I wanted it, but next time will be better. Just figured I would share!

I love viewing basketball shots, Out of these photos, I like the second one the best, I like the expression on 21's face, The first pic is kinda gross to me and the cropping doesn't seem right. In the third photo, the feet of orange guy are cropped, but as that's not the subject, so that's not really a problem, but I think that the background is kinda overexposed, plus you used a not-too-fast shutter speed, there's a little motion blur in their hands and feet.

I appreciate the feedback. I shoot mainly tournament paintball at regional and national events, so I'm used to being able to shoot at 1/800 no problem. Basketball was a different beast. And as for the crop, all of them are straight out of the camera in regards to crop. So there wasn't much I could do there.

I think the women's B-Ball shot at the very start is the strongest shot. Good expression, decent action,and close-in.

Nice shots. Images 1 and 3 are the strongest in your face images. it's always great when you have an opportunity to shoot a higher level of any sport, the athletes have moved up to a new intense skill level, and that's when you see it in the images. Great work on these.

I agree with Derrell, shot 1 is the strongest of the three. The girls with the balls expression is excellent.

I am another one that likes the first shot most. I can anticipate the impact coming and the whistle blowing, the tension in the face and arms, and the "uh oh, there she goes" look from the defender. There is a lot going on in that shot. In a perfect shooting world you might have zoomed back a bit so the defenders hand was not cut off, but overall a fine action shot.

The second one, while the timing for a jumper is good, it's a bit too soft for me.

And in the last one the player ruined the shot for you by closing his eyes, nothing you can do about that. A good player usually pops his eyes wide open as he nears the target, he needs to work on his concentration a bit more.

The first shot stops the action well, the others a bit soft. But when shooting available light for basketball in some gyms you are really pushing the limits for getting exposures that can stop the action crisp and clear, looks like that's the case here. Good job for the conditions.

Agreed. That e pressing in the first photo is just incredibly intense.

You sense of timing is good. I like the focus for the most part and if you did pp you did a good job. IMHO I think the shots are too tight. You didn't provide a context for the pictures. Yup you know it's basket ball but you don't see the rim or a larger context. In #1 you've amputated the one players rear-end and you have at 1/3 of another player on the left side. I would have liked to have seen more of the situation. #3 is the same. 1/3 of a player off to the left. in #2 the defensive player's feet are cut off and they are too close to the left side of the frame. For a newbie in the sports shooting it's a great start. My comments are in the context of photojournalism
