Colours, how I love and hate thee!
I feel like the finger painting kid with beautiful vibrant primary colours ... who kept going too long and has a muddy mess.
Pure, crisp, clean colours why do you mock me so?

Oh how I wish that was the problem. The problem is incredibly stupid, and I know it is going to "click" soon, I just can't put it together.... yet.

Over, some days I think the red cardinal is way worse than the yellow. I can get a gorgeous red but zero definition *sigh*

Try setting your in camera histogram to show RGB colours instead of luminosity (and get ready for a world of nightmares).

Mr_Mac, I didn't notice it looked like a steering wheel! Nope, didn't let him drive, snowstorm on the go and he looked sketchy!

It's underexposed which is a big part of why you don't have bright, vivid colors. Bright and underexposed are contradictory terms.

Ugh, no I wish I could say that was the issue, the original wasn't underexposed, that is alllll user error in post SCraig

That's not to say it isn't underexposed NOW but the original wasn't, it was actually quite close to over.

Understood. To be honest, in my opinion the colors look natural. You can always add some saturation but looking at the yellow right under his beak and the color of his legs and claws it really doesn't need a lot. Of course, I haven't seen the bird in person either.
