I lost a bit of detail under his chin but from the loooove yellow got earlier in this thread I'm thinking it may be a sacrifice I have to accept...
Ack after the upload it looks a little too sharpened now too but I was aiming more for the colours.

Yeah, I can see a bit of over-sharpening on his head and beak, but not too bad. Nice, vibrant yellow though

This guy is a Male Eastern/American Goldfinch, his whole body is the colour of his head in the summertime. They travel with other finches in large flocks in the winter, the flock that visits our feeders has got to be about 40+, these guys plus Purple Finches and Dark Eyed Juncos. I've been trying to get these guys right for a while now and this is the closest I've gotten!

I'd put a plastic grey card out there slightly out of frame but in the same light and adjust off of that.

Nah... it's just that vowels are so expensive down there in Northern Mexico that they have to conserve them wherever possible...

everything was ok ...until...they gave out the 3 month free Pro account at Christmas and instead of the 200 most recent showing all 1200 of them are there lol I THINK I have most of them sorted into the sets now though.

Aren't they awesome Charlie! I stumbled across these a few years back and loved them. I've used them on and off over the years but the funny thing is when I made my account here I had totally forgotten about them. One day I was poking through my old Photobucket account and found them and went "omg my RABBITS!!"

lol Rick, it's tempting! I'm always fighting that abstract/alternative devil inside
I want to make him less flat and dull, I want to see as much feather detail as possible (without the oversharpening in my last attempt) and I want him to be accurate. I think I may be a little too bright in my last edit but I'm going to call this guy's colours good and find something NOT yellow to practice on next

I think you've done as good a job as can be done with this particular image. He wasn't underexposed, but it does appear he is either in shadow, or under a flat sky. His natural brightness would pop a lot more in the sun.

But I am also a fan of soft, muted colors, especially in winter scenes. It's natural! This is actually a very cute shot of an inquisitive little guy. Our goldfinches down here have gone into their duller, yellow-green winter colors. Not near the eye-popping vividness of high summer. Don't forget they aren't even as bright during the winter, so no need thinking you've failed here.

Good eye, he was under a pretty heavy clouded sky and the sun was behind him, the light on the front of him was reflecting off snow/window.

Ah that is the "things that make you go hmmmm" quote of the day for me! I think I might have a habit of imposing my preferences (rich, vibrant, sharp colours) onto an image (not just this one) where my likes and dislikes shouldn't come into play. My editing was falling into a standard tweak based on the pictures I take most often, those rich colours. This makes me lose a LOT of the subtlety in shots like this for example. My hand turns very heavy trying to get "my preferences" out of images that just want to be something totally different. Thank you for the "hmmmm moment" !! I think this may make a big difference
