So I had another event this weekend >Live in the Vineyard. This was the pre-party to kick-off the festivities. Gloriana preformed at the party. A group form Nashville i believe. Anyway, here are the first 3 pics I edited. Haven't gone through the rest yet.

Now that you mention it, I wish I shot vertical as well. (Definitely something to try to remember for the next gig

)The crop works... because the mic is there, but it would be better vertical. So yeah, Ive been playing around with the flash for all these events. Im handholding the sb700 in my left hand so I can manipulate it around how I see fit. Its attached with a flash cord so its more reliable and im not covering up the sensor for the CLS system. These particular shots, the flash was on the camera and bounced off a relatively low ceiling -because when the band went on I swapped to the 70-200 and can no longer hold it in one hand. (thats gets to be a HEAVY setup). I also got lucky and the ceiling was covered in little white christmas lights.

Those look awesome! Verticle. I wouldn't mind seeing some that aren't so tight, too. To see some of the stage, what instrument they're actually playing. These are cool, though.

Did you shoot any without the flash? While these are nice images, they really don't have any feel to them.

Let me check. The lighting was atrocious. They also were not very animated on stage. And it was not your typical rock star setup on a proper stage. - i see what you mean though... lacks emotion?

Exactly. I know that concert lighting is sometimes tough to work with, but it does play a large part in the emotional feeling of photographs.

I way know what you mean with the movement on stage bit. I shot a show my band played this weekend, and Im used to the way we are. We're loud rock and roll and we jump and slam all over the place, but the other bands I was trying to shoot before our set just wanted to stand around. Made for some very boring pictures. Light trouble added in (I dont' have a speedlight yet), I decided I would enjoy it more if I kickedback and got a beer.

I was gonna say that, but Tirediron beat me to it. Why vertical on these last two? some people will ask...well...in the example of the lovely lady singer at the mic...she has no visible means of support [old joke, I know, but, srsly...] for her head...she's standing up there on-stage, and what we see is a lot of beautifully-rendered background made of of clean space and lots of nifty point-source lights, which render as interestingly shaped bokeh balls, but the singer is just a head and two fingers. At the bottom of the frame is empty space, out of which sprouts her neck. Her eyes and nose are pretty low in the frame. The horizontal frame is very shallow, from top-to-bottom on a modern 3:2 aspect ratio camera, so...a standing person in a tightly framed shot will often be just shown from the neck and upward...visually, that's unsettling.

Not trying to pick on you leeroix, but a lot of people often wonder why many people advocate for vertical framing on tight close-ups of standing people, so I thought I'd take a second to just state the rationale that underlies this idea. Now, as to the flash illumination + the bokeh ball backdrops; it might not have any "soul", but it would sure be fun to manipulate in post, with that well-lighted foreground...just sayin'.

I sure am jealous of the FABULOUS line-up of performers coming up at the festival. Man, I can hardly believe some of the names they have coming in!!!

I love the first one. There's so much awesome texture in there. It might be oversharpened, but oversharpened denim and spiked hair looks GREAT so, rock it, I say.
