To convey horror with that subject I keep seeing in my mind this shot from really low with a wide-ish angle. You know how someone in say, a movie is being drug to something they dread and when they get to it, it looks huge? I'm seeing something like that. Something that is daunting I guess. Haha it's hard to explain, but I hope you get it.
Also, there is a London and a Paris in Kentucky.
I get it. I wasn't thinking of horror i was thinking of despair, i think that's where i've gone wrong.
I think a greater part of the "problem" is that you've allowed your own emotions connected to the place and subjects to overcome your more general emotions. Thus instead of seeing the shots plain and impartial to view their own emotional content you keep thinking of the place itself and what it means to you before you're even viewing the photos (both at the composition taking stage and now in the aftermath of reviewing them).
This can lead to a false feeling of emotion because you're making connections and links outside of the photos content itself - thus when you show it to others they are giving a different response because they are not already emotionally attached.
It's a bit similar to how, photographically/artistically, poor shots of ones friends/family/pets/homes can bring out more of an emotional connection even though to an outside they only look like snapshots.
