decent camera for around $600

As others who are recommending their own setup I will recommend mine as well. I have an Olympus E-510 with their two lens kit (14-42 & 40-150). It cost me 642 bucks with free shipping from Amazon. What is great about the Olympus is it has IS (Image Stabilization) built into the body so all lenses you attach to it will be IS.

Go out and touch them all, see what feels good in your hands. Almost any if not all entry level DSLR's will be a lot of fun and provide you the ability to take great pictures.

I like those E-510's, they are a LOT of camera for the money.

I am a Nikon user, but cannot recommend any Nikons in that price range (even though I own a D40, I don't recommend them).

I don't think he has the answer yet other simple pointer like: this Pentax, this Canon, this Nikon etc. But why this camera and that camera? I just numbered his request above for better viewing.

You know,
there are alot of great cameras on ebay for alot less..

The Rebel Xti sells for around $550.. which is a $700 camera..

speaking of ebay.... if you are considering Pentax and ebay is going to be your source, do a search on equivalent Samsung bodies. Identical to Pentax but people don't bid on Samsung as heavily..... assuming that "Pentax" branding isn't important to you.

I just picked up a Samsung GX-1L used less than 1 year with kit lens for $200.

I really didn't need to pick up another camera but no one was bidding.... so I just made a bid and let it ride.

My Panasonic FZ18 18X 8.1 Megapixels is the best of the 18X Digital Cameras, which is as large as digitals get. And its given me about 600 perfect image quality pics out of 700 since early January when i got it. And the thing about it is, you can find it from 330 to 400 all over the net. Consider this one before you spend 600.

I just got my Canon Rebel XTi for less than $600 with a kit lens on it. XTi has awesome reviews online and its a Canon.

My brother has a Panasonic superzoom camera....I think an FZ15 or something like that with 12x optical zoom. It was our family camera for the past 3 years or so until I just got the Olympus E-510. I can highly recommend the Panasonic FZ cameras if you want some reach without dealing with an SLR camera. I almost went down that road myself but I decided I really wanted to get into the SLR arena.
