Dilemma

Im not sure what to do, i ended up getting my tamron 70-200 f/2.8 for under 800. Good deal? Sounds like a good deal to me, so i bought it. Now im looking at the canon 70-200 f/4 usm for a bit cheaper. Is the canon much better glass or should i stick to the fast tamron? The use for this lens is potraits mostly, Mabye a little sports her and there.

the only reason im considering it is because the AF on the tamron is slow, and i alrdy know what to expect from canon, the best. My question is really worth loosing those stops?

It does seem like a dilemma...both lenses seem to have pretty close optical performance, with the Canon having a slight edge in better chromatic aberration control, and the Tamron apparently, according to the testing site, suffering a little bit in close-range optical performance,and also being only 188mm long at 200mm. I dunno...I've not used the Tamron, but its focus is always knocked for being slow...maybe the faster-focusing Canon would be the better lens if you can get out of the Tamron without too big a financial hit.
