Do I Need?

...and hey FWIW I have a nikon .....
.... and I still have a (film) Canon. Don't care to link the sarcasm definition again, but now you're running with the big dawgs. Get off the front porch.............

Oh yeah, Lightroom. I stand by my initial post. Maybe, maybe not. Pretty damn good, but not the bees knees. Depends... is it in your budget? That would be the deciding factor.

Hey don't hijack my thread man!
okay i'm totally kidding :P

I can the academic version for $83 lol so yah its not a wallet buster.

I guess it's similar to the whole mac vs. pc conundrum yah?

Actually, no. I think its a no-brainer of Mac to PC. You pay much more for the mac but can't do any more (actually less) than you can with a PC. (see my sig)

There are not many things you can do with a Canon/Nikon that you can't do with a Nikon/Canon.

touche! so why do people choose one over the other if they both do the same thing? i would think nikon's are like mac's and canon's are like pc or maybe ubuntu lol

They choose one over the other because they have to choose one. When they choose one they have to be able to justify their decision (either to themselves or others or both) so they typically defend their decision by touting its supposed superiority over the other "choice".

The two cameras can do nearly the same exact thing. The two computers cannot. Kind of like comparing Gimp to Photoshop. Or even a Cobra to a Corvette. The former is very capable but can't compete with the latter when it comes down to professionals in the driver's seat.

" Ummm, yes, I was wondering...do you have 10 pound balls......???"

AHHHH memories

Anyway, on a serious note..CS4 should be plenty assuming you learn how to use it and learn how to streamline your workflow. Thats really the biggest difference between that and lightroom. One is quick and easy and has a lower learning curve. ( aside from the file sorting/management stuff ) I also use bridge and other than when it gets a little power hungry, it works great for me.

Yes I'm a g-designer by trade so I am thoroughly trained in CS and know and use automation and bridge :sexywink: I just wondered if LR would provide me with tools that CS doesn't have or maybe just a better way to automate.

But a graphic designer is NOT a photographer. You are going to use CS4 in a different way, with many different tools/techniques, used for many different purposes. If you were thoroughly trained in photography techniques on CS4, you would have no doubt been exposed to LR as well, in which case this entire thread would be pointless. If its that cheap, I say pick it up, the more tools you have, the better. However, I don't think you need it. I think of Lightroom more of how I would think of a plug in for CS4, a simplified and quick way to do most of the same crap ( not saying that it IS the same as a plug in before people get all pissy about it )

As for Canon or Nikon, ( and also PC vs Mac ) its really a waste of time to even open that can of worms, there is no right or wrong answer, and you certainly won't convert any diehard fanboys. Both Canon and Nikon are great. Just pick one and stick with it because the lenses are not compatible and thats where you will spend most of your money.

If you want the noise reduction of ACR 6 without upgrading to CS5 then LR3 is the only way to get it. It is superior to the noise reduction in ACR 5 which is as far as you can go in CS4.

Good point. Well with a student price, an upgrade to CS5 shouldn't be too pricey. Maybe she should get that instead.

boo I just bought CS4 in Feb this year then ringalingling CS5 comes out. aholes. I did a websearch and there was no firm date for CS5. ack. They don't offer student upgrades you just have to buy the whole suite which is $299 for standard edition, $448 for premium and $898 for master collection. Being that I just spent $1500 on all my photog stuff (and I'm not even done equipping) I'll just stick with the LR3. :P

I'll be doing a trial for LR and go to town. Serious now, thanks for the help :)

but i use all the other CS programs like illustrator and indesign I might as well upgrade. I really hate that Adobe is putting out updates like underwear.

can you see this picture below? i'm pulling from facebook and i did post in the test forum but no one is there to say if it shows up or not. so I thought i'd ask here.
