Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
sometimes i upload something i did in photoshop to photo bucket the colors are beyond horribly degraded, to the point that it doesn't even look like the photo i had on my computer
i assume this is something about the color space i'm using, but i don't know which one i would need if so. the part that i find kind of weird is that it doesn't always happen, nor did it used to happen with other similar software

any advice would be much appreciated

I hear things about certain uploading sites butchering quality - never used photobucket, so I couldn't say.

here's an example from today

here's what it should look like

here's what the upload looks like

the only way i got the correct color was by taking a screen shot from my computer

Haha, just realized you used my photo as an exaple. It is good for that though, as it has such bright colors. I have not used photobucket before, but I have heard about that, and now im assuming it happens looking at the (my) photo above.

Are you resizing the images before you upload them?

For instance, if your image dimension are 4000 x 3000 pixels, and you upload to PB set at 1,024 × 768 pixels, PB needs to resize the image on the fly. That may be where the loss of IQ starts.

Try resizing them to the size you want them on PB first, check for IQ, then upload.

In my case, I do resize them before uploading. But it is the colours that are the most noticeably degraded. I don't know if it is the same for the OP...

Check your colourspace that you are saving in. The internet is pretty much only compatible with sRGB so other colour spaces such as aRGB will simply not work online (for all browsers).

As a result when you save a final version for the internet make sure that, after resizing and the like, you check and set the colourspace to sRGB before saving. You can always save a high-res version in another colourspace for your own use.

the image i used as an example was already pretty small, and already in sRGB

Odd sRGB is normally the problem with colour based difficulties - the only other guess would be if you were allowing photobucket to make big changes to the original file (ie resizing down from fullsize) however if the photo was already prepared for the net in scale and colourspace I'm not sure what the problem could be.

It can't be anything linked to layers within the file since JPEG never have layers (to my understanding) to get messed up. All I can say is try double checking that the colourspace was indeed set to sRGB and re-upload.

The JPEG photo of the bird (2nd one) that you have on Photobucket is not sRGB. It's nothing. It's ICC profile has been striped.

Photobucket behaves just fine and it leaves your photo's embedded color space intact as long as you resize the photo before you upload it. Photobucket has a 1024 pixel maximum limit. If you upload a larger file Photobucket will resize the file and in doing so it will strip off the files ICC profile. It' looks like that's what happened.

Flickr is better behaved in this regard. It also has the same size limit and it will resize your photo down, however it will retain the photo's ICC profile in the downsized version.

this image was exactly that size... seeing as the original was taken from flickr

the whole size thing shouldn't apply to that one

I take back what I just said. I just ran a test with Photobucket. What I described seemed correct but I found a twist:

I uploaded a 1280 pixel photo that was tagged sRGB. Photobucket resized the photo and as I suspected it stripped off the ICC profile.

I then upload a 1000 pixel photo that was tagged sRGB. Again Photoshop did as I suspected and left the sRGB profile intact.

Here's the twist and I didn't know this. I uploaded a 1000 pixel photo that was tagged Adobe RGB and Photobucket didn't resize it but it did strip off the ICC profile.

New assessment: Photobucket strips of all ICC profiles when it resizes a photo. It respects sRGB profiles and leaves them alone if the photo is already sized. But it strips off non-sRGB profiles no matter what the size of the photo.

Joe

EDIT: So Photobucket is OK to use if:
1. Resize the photo before upload.
2. Photo must be sRGB.
