There's this park close to my house that is always full of people and their dogs. It's basically THE dog place in town. However, it is not legally a dog park, so if anyone has their dog off their leash they run the risk of being fined $160. And it happens...A lot...

So I decided to go and take some photos of the different people and their dogs at the park. It's not necessarily to advocate a dog park (a motion was shot down by the city council years ago), but mostly I want to give people some nice photos as well as document the variety of people and dogs.

Oh, and the park isn't actually called Flint Park. It's on Flint Street but its name is Tech Terrace Park. I just though Dogs of Flint was a more intriguing and fluid name. :P

Also; I realized after the fact that the ND filter I was using caused some noticeable smearing in some of the photos, and it wasn't even a cheap filter. I have already bloodied my knuckles by punching every wall in my house, and I've decided to keep the photos in the project since the smearing isn't everywhere in the photo...And because I...I like the photos that it is in otherwise.

That's just the way this kid smiles btw. He has a distinguished-older-man smile in every photo.

I really love these images :) sorry, I'm not good enough as of yet to give any constructive feedback. :D except maybe on #5 - the left side of the doberman's face is underexposed which detracts from the image .. but then again I can't do it any better so I guess I should just shut it :D

Great idea for a series! Stylistically, the set is very cohesive. I like all of the shots, but #5 stands out the most to me. The color and demeanor of the subject really make it snap.

Well thanks. :) That's really what I was trying to do was make it cohesive by using similar lighting setups and compositions.

I like 3 and 5

Are you strobing?

Yes I am. In the first two I'm using a 580EX II and a shoot-through umbrella. Unfortunately, the umbrella with the small, and slightly under-powered flash made it difficult to get enough light onto the subjects, and the umbrella was too harsh, so I started using an AB800 with a medium softbox since it has a baffold in it for shots 3-6

In #4 I can't tell if the kid is happy or straining to keep a hold of his dog. I agree with others that #5 is striking.

Thank you. I do think that in 5 everything works the best. The background, the lighting, and the posing just kinda fell together to make it work the best. However, it is one of the photos that has the issue of smearing, mostly on the side lit part of his face and the dog's face. It's a really...weird pattern because it's only on the edge of their faces image left.

Is it very noticeable...

I see no evidence of this "smearing" you speak of. Five is my favorite, hands down.

Well that's good. :)

It's just one the side of their faces. I brought it into Photoshop just now and applied Smart Sharpen > Motion Blur, which helped a little. I think it's only prominent when the image is blown up.

I suggest adding it to your portfolio, and I doubt anyone but yourself we EVER notice it.
