Encouragement to shoot raw

I think the Brightness vs Illumination comments are applicable to a lot of photography. Simply because photography is ART, and art is subjective. Absolute numbers mean little compared to the alchemy both digital and film manipulations have become.
Do you see differences in the two photos below? Honestly if you asked 100 random people if one was better than the other do you believe they would break out 50/50 on the choice? What if you asked 100 photographers?

Just stepping in here to suggest a new thread.

This thread's OP hasn't commented in this thread since August of 2023, so he has likely considered his issues addressed.

The thread was resurrected in April 2025, by a well-meaning member answering the OP without noticing the dates.

The discussion resumed and has mostly stayed on topic - until recently.

From continuing the discussion about shooting RAW, the thread first segued into a discussion of DMAX on digital prints, then moved to micro transitions in portraiture, and has now segued to luminance v brightness.

We're all for discussion and gaining understanding, but at this point (page 12 in a resurrected post no longer on topic), this new discussion topic might be better served outside of the "Photography Beginners" forum.

I'd suggest re-opening with the most recent new topic in "Beyond the Basics," or "Digital Discussion and Q&A," or even "Graphics Programs and Photo Gallery" forums.

Thanks to all - thread closed.
