Erica - kicking back in lingerie

Had a fun shoot with Erica. I'm beginning some edits and thought I'd share a couple. Single softbox with double diffuser on Elinchrom 250.

The second shot does not "read" right...by that I mean it's difficult to tell which breast is showing...it's just not a good angle to show her from. Plus, there's only one of the pair showing...what we are being shown is not making much visual "sense" in the second frame.

I'm not a portrait photographer, nor do I play one on TV. However, aside from the obvious hotness, I had a few thoughts...

1. The light seemed a little harsh. More so in the second than the first. Looks like you need a bigger diffuser.
2. It looks like you're using only one light (not sure). You could benefit from some others, including, I think, a very soft light on the background to separate her from it. May be a limitation of gear.
3. I would crop that first one more aggressively. One, I think there's a little too much dead speace to begin with and, two that arm of the couch or whatever on the right is SUPER distracting, and it looks like she's looking right at it. Put a bottle of vodka on the arm there and you have a very nice vodka ad, you know what I mean?

I prefer #2, the pose looks much nicer imo. How big was your softbox? Generally for shooting females you would want 2 light sources at least, 3 or more ideally and as big and close as you can get them. That being said you've done well with what you have

I can guarantee you that if Derrel can't tell what's going on with the boobs, NOBODY can.

I feel like the light isn't sure what it wants to be be. You're almost going for a Caravaggio look here, but but quite getting it. Either push more light around with more strobes or reflectors to get a more traditional "fashion" look, or move the light more to the side, dial it down a bit, and let lots of the girl vanish in to shadow. This no man's land in the middle is a fine thing to try, but I don't think it works -- it's not aggressively enough one thing or the other, and people (well, I at least) will tend to see it as a failed attempt at one or the other.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. All good points to be considered for action. I did some with multiple lights as well. I was going for a moody one light look. The best part is practicing and learning. I don't foresee a Facebook fan page in my future any time soon. :mrgreen:

As long as a breast is showing I didnt know it mattered which one. I would find photographing someone that good looking would be difficult. I was going to say hard, but I didnt want anyone to misconscrew my meaning.

I have some with a downward view of both. I'm just taking my time editing (i.e. I'm having too much fun laying on the couch with the remote).

How does someone "kick back" in a bra, tight panties, and high heels?! That's hardly comfortable. Better to take it all off, and re-shoot.

Anyway, snarky and pervy comments aside... I like the mood and lighting. The slouchy couch is distracting in #1. Also, those concentric lines in #2 distract, but I like the angle and pose. Maybe have her move back on the couch in #1 and try a slightly different angle in #2.
