First attempt at Low Key

I can do nothing about your emotional lability. You'll have to work on that yourself.

If I say 'x' and you get all upset because you're sure that 'x' is false, and then it turns out that 'x' is true after all, well just take my word for it. I know what I'm talking about.

Your gallery says you don't know what you are talking about

I know what these terms mean, which is the relevant issue. Care to keep this on topic? Or do you want to get all ad hominem? Your impertinence is so charming.

This is what high-key looks like:

This is what low key looks like:

Any questions?

Why are you hi-jacking my thread Mr Optimus Prime :)

So you don't know what mid key is then, don't you have any of your own examples

I don't work in the field of portraiture. So what? I know what the terms mean and can provide examples.

You are unfit to touch the hem of my cloak.

Do you have something to contribute about high-key and low-key? If not, get out before I have you thrown out.

I love how you contradict yourself on this. You claim that dog pic is high- key, yet you just argued about how high key has bright background and subject? That background is black and the subject has dark tones throughout.

Now I'm confused. I thought that it was you who suggested that the dog picture was high key:

I would say that is high key. Evenly lit no heavy shadows on the subject yet a dark background. Looks like some backlighting or hairlight or something giving slight highlights to the right.

and I disagreed with you, because I disagree with your concept of high key and low key.

Best,
Helen

Yes I thought that to my best guess that it was high-key. The point I was making is that this entire argument started because it was stated that High-key means light subject and background and low-key means dark subject and background. This was stated by P.Prime. Yet now he says the dog is high-key, but that contradicts his ignorant comments that started this entire argument. Also, I would like to say, that its not so much the argument that rubbed me the wrong way, I can agree to disagree, its the ignorant way that this guy goes about every single one of his posts. Why do you think I am not the only one giving this guy flack. He has made quite a reputation for himself.

Be sure what whom you're talking about. I said nothing about the dog photo. I have not commented on it. Helen did.

The OP did not understand what constituted high key or low key, and his photos therefore were guided in the wrong direction. I was trying to show what those actually are by providing classic examples.

There seems to be widespread confusion on these terms.

I stand corrected. You had a link below that, but the quote was in reference to the dog picture, so I did not notice the link. I can admit when I am wrong, you should try it sometime.

Why are you hi-jacking my thread Mr Optimus Prime :)

I haven't. You don't know what high key and low key are, exactly, and I'm trying to show you. I want to help you.

I know what both are, i'm trying to get some opinions on the low key I attempted

We really need a "shoot myself" emoticon here.

Here's the story of Mr. Prime for all of the people who don't know:

Mr. Prime has spent the majority of his life attending concerts and music festivals where a high concentration of crunchy hippies are found. He enjoys taking photos of the hippies and all of the other scene kids that are obligatory for every concert or music festival. He also really likes taking photos of original things, like rusty buses. Rusty buses are so original that you can go on google images, and type in "rusty ass buses" and not get a single image of a rusty bus. Why's that? Because Mr. Prime has pioneered the art of photography with his wisdom. He also has such a deep understanding of photographic terminology and the inner workings of a camera. You can tell that he knows his stuff because everyone agrees with him.

Since Mr. Prime's background is in philosophy, you can see how well that translates into his knowledge of photography. After all, both fields (photography and philosophy) are virtually identical. Now, Mr. Prime (retired at his old age ~60 years or so) now sits in front of his computer, scanning the photo forum and multiple pornography sites simultaneously. Rarely does his right hand leave his crotch, but sometimes when he's feeling a bit lonely, he'll make a harsh and derisive post that lacks any kind of factual information regarding any topic.
