First Outdoor Portraits with flash.

Im an action sports photographer, I just got a new Einstein flash last week and I was itching to use it, so my girlfriend and I headed to the nearest lake towards sunset, I broke out Albert and set up. I usually dont shoot portraits with flash. Usually its windy and i dont have enough hands blah blah. anyway this is what I came out with. I was pleased for just playing around with my new flash.

Nikon d300s at 1/80th ISO 100 ( lo 1)
85mm 1.8D at f5
Sunto th right of the frame

Einstein shot into an umbrella on the left side. Can't remember the power setting. 40 w/s I think it said.

The branch in the water is pretty distracting, but as far as everything else, it looks real good. Seperation is great. Wish I could make shots like that, well done!

Thank you! I feel like the branch could go either way depending on personal taste, I had several photos from another angle excluding the branch, but the seemed to empty... Thanks for the comment

I think that with the dof you have the branch is a problem. If the branch is there, a deeper depth of field to keep it in focus would help.

Well you have a decent balanced image but it's terribly flat. If you hadn't said so I'd not known you used any fill light whatsoever. That might be a good thing but I think I'd prefer she was lit just a bit more to really separate her from the background.

so to seperate her from the background i could've
A. Raised the shutter speed to darken the natural light or,
B. put a second may be a third flash behind her as a hair light?
C. one both A and B
