I diligently read all the replies to my thread about still struggling with focus. I decided to find myself a stationary subject to experiment a tad on. The lighting is awful; I know. I purely was trying to evaluate different focusing settings. I used the center focus point as my selected auto focus point (the point above it also automatically focused in conjunction with it.) I used AF-S and single point AF along with Matric metering. The first 3 are taken with an aperture of 5.6

These next 3 were taken with all the same settings except with an aperture of 3.5

The last 3 were taken with the same settings and the 3.5 aperture. However, I selected a left top focus point and positioned the point on the snowman's left eye.

Matrix metering takes an average of the entire scene. That is not a good choice for metering when you want to selectively focus a subject.

Notice that as you get further away from your focal point, the Matrix metering is making the exposure of the background brighter.

However, metering does not effect focus. But, low light can make auto focus perform poorly, which is why your D3100 has an AF-assist light (page 57 of the D3100 user's manual).

I see no untoward focus issues of the subject in any of these 9 strobe lit shots.

You could have condensed all 3 of those posts into one thread >_> Also, what exactly was the point of doing this?

I wanted to see the results of changing my aperture/distance of myself in relation to subject on my focus. I posted them because, even though I can "see" the differences, everyone here seems to be able to interpret them in a much more helpful and explanatory way.

Well, it really isnt much more complex than it looks - refer to KmH's post.

Either way, you could have put this into one post :sexywink:

..and there are 9 pictures of that snowman staring into my soul O-O

In-focus Frosty, thanks for sharing your experimental shots

So, tell me what you learned?

Bingo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I said the exact same thing in another post of hers.
Therefore it's time for a little honesty at risk of hurting feelings.
By nature I try to be at least decent. I am all for those who want to learn. I've been there. I'm still there.
Take this for what it's worth AMOMENT.
I'm all for your learning photography. YOU HAVE BECOME ANNOYING as if you seek attention like nothing I've ever seen on this forum.
You're intentionally drawing attention to yourself by making multiple posts on the same subject and asking questions that you could easily find the answer to with very little research.
I offered you what I consider good advice on another thread of yours " sometimes you have to trust your eyes for compositional purposes" which you Ignored.
The camera is not going to do everything for you every time you want it to.

As I understand it you'd like to become a professional photographer so you can spend more time with your children.
Nothing wrong with that. I applaud you for it. Realize that you're going down a long damn road with a lot of bumps and a hell of a lot of competition.
Every last one of us who has tried to help you and given you advice , has seen all this before from Mom's with cameras. In other words , you're beating people over the head for your wants, and attention.
If I could wave a magic wand and make you a pro right this instant , I would. If for no other reason than to spare the forum. So there you have it. I'm mean and nasty, right?

Someone had to say it.

WHat is so offensive about someone who is learning? If you don't want to deal with her IGNORE! She's at the very beginning and learning in fits and bits and pieces. Big damn deal. If you don't answer someone else will. I ignore a ton of posts every day. Not my cup of tea. Some of them are annoying as hell as far as I am concerned, but seeing how I can't stand the stupidity doesn't mean that someone else can't, won't or doesn't want to help.
It's like the customer who doesn't want to pray my price. They aren't my customer. They're someone else's. No sweat off my back! NEXT!

For one thing, I'm glad to see you working with static objects and practicing with your metering. I would suggest next time you know the lighting sucks, make an attempt to fix it.

Wow, harshness in the thread. Seems there's an ignore feature or such for when someone's threads annoy.
