Good tripod?

I'm looking at purchasing a good quality tripod. I've looked at manfroto and slik but I'm not so sure which to get. I want one that's heavy duty. Any suggestions? Not looking to spend over $250.

Are you trying to get both a tripod and a head for $250, or just the tripod?

Two words: Buy used! You can get probably 40% more for your money buying used tripods and as long as you look them over, you shouldn't have any problems. I would go for the Manfrotto over the Slik. Giottos and Manfrotto are brands of choice and my personal recommendation for the best quality/value is a set of 190 legs with a 488 (or if the budget will stretch that far) a 468 head.
