In fact, the Coast Guard (that was mocked) might have a more diffcult standard of eligibility even at this time.

The standards changed because the Armed Forces had larger needs abroad. I suspect it will now go back to a more selective approach that you all might be more familiar with.

Well, for the U.S., with the economy being as bad as it has been, it's actually much more difficult to get in. Recruitors are turning people away, whereas 10 years ago, you might have been right.

In any case, I almost joined the Marines. Took my ASVAB with them and everything. It's unfortunate that the only thing the recruitor would offer me is 'The pride of being a Marine'. When I asked what my job would be, he told me I woud be a Marine. When I asked him about sign on bonuses he said they don't do that...So basically, he wouldn't guarantee me a school, wouldn't give me a bonus, and wouldn't tell me what I would be doing. Walked next door, joined the Navy, and ran Nuclear reactors for them for 6 years. No regrets.

We did have some marines on board our air craft carrier. From everything I gathered, their job was to hold their racks down in case we got in bad weather. I think they may have also lifted weights every once in a while.

First, he clearly was not calling the American people "retards". He was calling the hippy a retard, who's right to be so is protected by the military.

Next, your broad statement about recruiting standards and manning is asinine. The Navy for example, has become increasingly difficult to get into in recent times. On top of that, we just had our phase 1 and 2 Enlisted Review Boards that booted 3000 sailors E1-E8 with 7-15 years of service. That's additional to the Perform to Serve that is still in place.

Recruiters do have a quota. They have a billet unlike any other in the military. Instead of a 3 year billet, they have 36 one month extensions. If they don't meet their quota, they go back to sea(in the Navy), or wherever the other branches send them. In any case, they are like salesman. They do have a quota, and once they reach that quota, they like to keep money in the bank, so to speak, and push off others to other months. Also, scheduling is based on how many people boot camp can accommodate, how many people their first school can accommodate, etc.

In any case, with the economy being what it is, enlistment is at an all time high. People who got out are trying to get back in and people who can't find jobs are trying to join for the first time. I assure you, recruiters are definitely turning people away.

Certain jobs will always be in demand...for instance, I could go back in as a Nuke if I wanted to. It's one of those jobs the Navy has always had difficulty in filling. Mostly because we make much more money on the outside and we get out.

Regardless, about the original topic, yes, boot camp photos suck but even in their suckiness, there is still some pride at looking back at them. If you can do a better job, by all means do it. If you need some help, post some examples and we'll do our best to help. It actually offends me a bit that you would think you would need to ask if posting pictures of a soldier in Uniform would offend somebody. Heck, post them. For the people who get offended, well, I don't think I've reached my limit on my ignore list, yet.

I know when I was thinking of going in (2000), they seemed to be more strict. Aced the ASVAB - the recruiter told me it was the highest score he'd seen, but they probably tell that to everyone. I might have gotten one, maybe two questions wrong... I never did go in though - ended up getting a good job (I was fresh out of highschool then, so it's not like I had any good jobs on the horizon at the time) instead. Now, I'm doing the same thing I would be in the military, with better pay & benefits. I don't have anything against the military, they just couldn't offer competitive pay. (And even now, I don't think active duty pays enough. I don't know if low pay is part of the 'training' or what, but the commercial world trained me faster and paid me better than the government could have. Now I do the same job those guys do for more money ... and the end user is the same.)

I work with military personnel daily, and deliver products that they need - so I feel that I am still providing service to my country, even if the government doesn't sign my checks.
