Howdy,
I'm totally new to photography and it has become my new hobby. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a decent camera and glass (wow.. i sound like i've been doing it for years). Can anyone suggest a school / class in NYC or are the online courses good enough?

Why not try looking around your area for camera clubs; most clubs have a range of members from brand-new amateurs to seasoned professionals, and are great places to learn. The one to which I belong, in addition to regular 'outings' has monthly lectures on topics ranging from colour-management to photography and the law. Usually much less expensive than lessons and unless your plan is to turn professional, probably more than sufficient to get you shooting great pictures.
