Hi I am new to this forum! I'm Katrina!

I currently use a D50... I know it's old but it's been my old faithful! I went to buy a bigger sd card and they only make up to 2gb Sd cards and apparently it isn't comparable with SDHC! So I'm shopping :)

I don't have a preference to either Nikon or Canon but I have a few in mind in each brand.

I am mostly looking at a Canon T2i I think, but have also been looking at the Nikon D3100... any ideas, thoughts, or other suggesstions?

canon t2i. it's a great camera for what it can do and such a price.

and get a prime lens. go with a 50mm f1.4
that + video capabilities on the camera = sweet goodness

Thanks! My friend also suggested the T1i and the Si...

I don't have the T2i myself but my boyfriend does and he has been extremely happy with it. A couple of differences I noticed about the Nikon D3100 is that it does not offer bracketing (the T2i does) if you think that may be important to you. Also the Nikon D3100 does not have a built in autofocus motor, and I believe the canon T2i does (again if that is important to you).
I have been trying to decide on a new camera myself and have found this site helpful Digital Camera Reviews index, DSLR reviews, lens reviews | Cameralabs

Good luck and have fun with your new purchase!

Here is a link to a site that, while it is aimed a Canon photographers, a lot of the questions apply equally to any brand of camera.

Canon EOS Beginners' FAQ II - Cameras

There are also the T3i and the T3, both of which are brand new and may not be out yet in your area, but if they are, then you might want to look at them too. As well, you may want to look at the 60D. A lot depends on what your budget is and whether you will buy only the camera body, or will go with a kit which includes a lens, sometimes two, plus the camera body. Regardless of what you decide, my advice would be to shop around and make sure you are getting the best deal for your money. Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers,

What about lens, if you have some good Nikon glass, it might not be worth it to switch to Canon.

If you don't, then I believe the T2i gives you more than the D3100. The T2i has more dedicated controls, while D3100 doesn't even have an ISO button, which I find disappointing. Then there's also the lack of AF motor in the baby Nikon. Canon also doesn't use in-camera AF motors, but all new lenses do have one, so that's not really a problem.
