Hinder (C&C wanted!)

Here are some photos I did of Hinder at one of their shows in Yorkton, Sk. I drove out 3 hours from my city to go to this show.

Tell me what you think of the photos? What I could have done better, etc? Thank you!

My impression of concert pictures is that they all suffer from the totally impossible lighting effects and difficult conditions. Inevitably the high contrast and overhead lights means deep shadows and often hidden eyes - a real problem.

I think that #3 is the best rendition of the singer and #2 is the best potential graphic image if you can get some detail at all in the eye sockets

Since you can never hope for super, total quality unless you are incredibly lucky, I would suggest using as high an ISO as you can possibly on your camera; and check your shots to see if you are getting some detail in the eye sockets- which really adds some life to the image. You've caught the action so your shutter speed and technique seem fine.
Do all your fixes before the BW conversion.

I hope you pulled back to get some wider angles to show the energy of the group - absolute quality and stop action is not crucial then.

In this particular picture below, there is a nice graphic potential but the eyes are hidden and the arm is pretty bright, drawing attention.

I would try lightening the eye sockets and burning down the arm and the bright spots on the face and hands to make his face the sole attraction. I would also crop more tightly to remove some of the tension draining stuff.

I hope this is of some interest.

I see what you mean about the eyes though and I agree.

I'm definitely going to be checking the eyes more often, thank you.

Actually you do because you've set your camera to certain parameters.
It's the equivalent in film of tossing your film to a lab monkey and taking what he/she gives back.

I couldn't rate them (I'm out of my depth in concert photos) and wouldn't if I could.

One of the potentials of these kinds of images - so graphic - is further PPing.

If you learn to shoot in RAW you should have a much easier time recovering detail in the eyes. Your camera should have come with some software to do basic edits with RAW.

I have shot in RAW, but I normally don't. And yes, it came with software that allows me to do that.

I also just downloaded GIMP.
