Hiss when using XLR microphone

I have an SM58 and a Hosa XVS101F Right Angle 3.5mm M to XLR F 1 Foot, when I use them on either my Kodak Zi8 or my Canon T3i I get a distracting hissing noise. I use a similar adaptor to record interviews with my iPad and the SM58 without problems.

Anyway I can get rid of the hissing sound, hopefully without having to purchase a new handheld microphone?
