Homecoming portraits for C&C:)

I got volunteered to do my moms friends sons' photos before their highschool homecoming dance. I can take all the practice I can get so of course I was pleased to do them. I was getting anxious b/c the sun was going down fast. I used my tripod for the 1st time along with my on-camera flash with a DIY diffuser..... other than the house in the background any C&C for me to learn from? Thanks! (all shot with my 50mm lens @ 1/200 4.0/f and 400 ISO)

Not bad; the two main issues I see are excessive DoF resulting in sharp, clear and distracting backgrounds, and the fact that you were down low, shooting up. In future, try larger apertures and longer focal-lengths to reduce DoF and isolate the subject from the background, and shoot at eye-level with the subject.

I completely agree! ugh, I thought that with my f-stop only at 4, and the background so far away my DOF would be alot smaller. I did 2 layers with gaussion(forgive spelling) blur. Heres the 2 to compare. Does this help?
