Hospital displaying my work.

I know its a hospital, but you might consider approaching this a little like a coffeeshop setup. Many people will put prints (most often landscape but not excursively) into local coffee shops and the like with a sale price on the print (in the corner); the idea being that the print hangs there and some people will buy them - the coffeeshop takes a small commission (normally) and the photographer gets to sell the print and frame.

You could suggest the above or something along those lines for the hospital - maybe offering them more of a lions share of the costs as a donation (its totally your choice on this matter).

That at least gets you both exposure and also offers the chance of getting some financial compensation - though its a gamble and I'll warn that animal prints tend not to be the biggest sellers (most of the wildlife photographers that I know make their money in workshops and trips rather than the prints unless they can attach themselves to something like nat geo or the BBC).

I'm assuming that you're not in the portrait photography business line though it might be worth considering that line of work - a few prints on the walls of people children and a corner of the hospital one or two days a week for a photo session (esp babies born there) might well be a viable earning option for you

Maybe I'll go to the zoo this weekend and see what I can see!

Yeah,
Also, its worth a shot anyway, id say try and find a manager or something and let them know that you are doing photographs for a children's hospital or what ever (No one can refuse children's hospital) and see if they can get you closer or at least show you which animals have babies on hand.

Maybe they will end up being generous and you could end up with shots you never would have got.

Good Luck.

Unless you've got a foot under the door already (ie you know someone highish up in the zoo) I'd say that this probably won't work for a large commercial zoo. Its just too big an organisation to easily get the permission (ie ground level staff often do not have the ability to make choices). You might get lucky though; but I would expect it to take time to achieve.

If you want that kind of exposure on a single trip you'll be best suited to a smaller wildlife centre type affair or a specialist animal centre where the on-site staff are far more likely to also be the owners and the ground level staff have more control over things.

Thank you for a post that did not amount to simply yelling at me.

I will see if something like that will work in this situation.

True, a larger zoo will probably be stricter with its rules. Plus baby animals are probably a bit more protected as in they are not going to let someone just walk up.
But I don't know what kind of Zoo he has in mind so if its a small one maybe it will work.
Which brings me to the idea of a Petting Zoo.
Are there any petting zoo's near you? They usually have smaller more fun animals for kids.

^This is the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo...one of (if not the) best (& biggest) zoos in the country, I doubt they'd let me up close but it's worth a shot.

but they do have some really nice set ups already to where you could get a really good picture...

Make a quick flyer with pictures of the suffering children and how they need awesome pictures of animals playing to cheer them up.

If they say no to that, then ask them where they left their heart. HAHA

A zoo is hardly nature, can't you get some natural wildlife shots instead. Maybe set up a bird feeder, or even take some photos of people's pets. You have to make it look natural and wild (so, rules out pets).

Truth. It's an awesome zoo...I just gotta get someone to go with me...zoo's are hardly any fun alone.

You've not been to the Henry Doorly Zoo huh...:lmao:

Lets just say it's not like a lot of zoos that you picture right off the bat. It's world class.

I will admit I haven't been there with my photographer's brain yet so I don't know exactly what to expect in terms of shooting.

True and it won't hurt to ask - though be careful who you ask. The problem with large zoos is the division of the work force and how you get separate working groups within the unit. The result is if you ask them something outside of their department they either won't know the answer or will only know the official zoos policy answer. Keepers are probably your best bet, but try to get there early - weekends will be very busy times for a zoo so it won't be long before its very full.
The one thing you might be able to swing is asking for early entry to the zoo since most open quite late, but have staff on site far earlier.

Just make sure you leave any kids at home and whoever goes with you knows that you'll have your "photographers brain" on. I've found that generally if you go out with people who are not "photographers" or doing their own thing that they quickly get bored waiting for you to "get that shot". Esp if you want to spent an hour sitting infront of one animal cage for the shot.

Don't be ridiculous. This is free advertising, you'd be retarded to refuse.
Agreed. I dont even know why your asking if you should do it lol.

Most photogs already have a stash of really good stuff they have taken. Trust me if you try to force it, it will be hard to get good ones especially with animals.

Free advertising is only any good if its actually going to advertise your product and get you work/sales as a result of it. If its not then you don't gain anything by it.

Also remember most people are going to see those prints on the wall - see the signature go "cool" and then walk on by to see how their child is doing in the hospital. There is far too much distraction in that environment to rely upon anyone remembering your name long enough to go home and google you.

That is why I suggested the option of on-site sales and taking collaboration further with the hospital to provide a portrait service because those run a higher chance of actually managing to advertise ones work and turn an income (however small)

I disagree, Have you ever been to a hospital? A bunch of people sitting around waiting and waiting. Nothing to do but sit around and stare at the pictures on the walls. And it also sounds really good to say "yea my work is diplayed all around blah blah blah hospital"

I see no good reason why you wouldn't want to do it.
